We watched this presentation where the photographers, Marie Smith and Tami Afab talked about their projects that where both a collaboration and where about mental health.
We then took our own photos
I really like the photo where you can see the reflection in the glass this shows that the person is scared to look into the camera lens, implying that maybe that are also afraid of looking people into the eye. i also really like it as it shows the sitters emotions.
Marie Smith Story
Marie Smith researched a lot before she started to collaborate with people, she explored her own mental health first and then she started to question what other people of colour experience during their mental health journey. Her first project was called the fog has lifted and i can slightly think clearer. She then did more research regarding the woman of colour community. She decided to begin the project by doing her own self portrait, she took her photos in her own back garden. After she slowly started working with people and built a relationship with the people she collaborated with, she always made sure that the people she collaborated with were okay with the photos she took. after this she decided to do more research about the LGBTI+ community as she noticed that a lot of woman of colour that had mental health issues where also part of that community. So after working researching about that she started woking with them.
Exhibition visit
For this i went to an exhibition and i took photos of other artists art, during the visit i really enjoyed the art that involved the mask, i feel like we can connect to the art more as we have been though those times and on the masks there are chapters and paragraphs from books, i feel like this piece is really creative and many people will understand this work. Theres not really a nice of work that i don't like here, they all are extremely creative. Here are some photos from the exhibition...
Photos
I was asked to take a series of 12 portraits outside of school, this was a collaboration between me and the sitter, during the project is took time and talked with my sitter about her emotions and whether she was comfortable with me putting showing these, I also asked her to write a paragraph on how she was feeling, however she did not feel comfortable with me sharing that, so instead i decided to ask her to write out a couple of works on the mask about was kind of emotions she was feeling in the moment, you can see these masks in the photos. I then asked her to put it on and face her emotions. These photos portray her emotions, in some she's smiling in some she's not, these photos can show how easily it is to put on a filter for your emotions and filter out the bad ones, the ones you don't want people to know about.
Overall I am happy with the results of the photos, they portray the sitters emotions quite well and are all fairly creative, however I think that I could have a wider variety of angles and shots that compliment the sitters emotions more. I could have also used a wider rage of lighting and used darker shots to emphasis the mood and emotion in the photos.
